Though Motorola threw much of its weight this year behind its new Razr2s, the company has given us a series of models that emphasize basic features and dependability rather then flashy designs and high-end offerings. Verizon Wireless' Moto W385, which we reviewed last month, was one such handset, but now we focus on the similar Motorola W490. Built for T-Mobile, the W490 follows the W385 in providing basic calling features in a simple, easy-to-use design
The Motorola W490 is primarily concerned with productivity as evidenced by its many features. These include voice record, alarm clock, calendar, calculator and currency converter. The unit boasts an integrated speakerphone and advance speech recognition.
Phone Features
Measuring 0.69 inches thin, the Motorola W490 sports a 1.9-inch LCD screen with support for 262K colors and a 176 x 220-pixel resolution. It has a 5 MB internal memory, which can be expanded up to 2 GB using optional MicroSD memory cards. This phone can store up to 1000 contact entries (plus up to 250 stored on the SIM card), and each entry can store up to five numbers as well as picture ID.
Design
Like the W385, the W490 sports a design that¡¯s based loosely on the Motorola Krzr K1. Though it¡¯s not nearly as streamlined as its Krzr cousin¨Cthe W490 is boxier with sharper angles¨Cit has the same slender shape with similar dimensions (3.89 inches by 1.89 inches by 0.68 inch). At 3.7 ounces, it¡¯s a bit on the heavy side for a flip phone, but you¡¯re rewarded with a handset that has a sturdy construction and a solid feel in the hand. Our W490 review model came in basic black, but T-Mobile also sells versions in purple and green.
September 24 is a red letter day for the Motorola W490, which looks like the sleek and chic KRZR. Well, yeah, sans the jampacked features, as it lacks a camera, Bluetooth and other goodies the KRZR has to offer. The W490 is comparable to the W385 or the . I¡¯ll stop talking about what this phone doesn¡¯t have and focus on what it has and can do, such as music playback capability, MMS, T-Mobile¡¯s myFaves service, among others. I hope this has a radio atleast. But hey, it¡¯s slim and easy on the pocket!
